Farms to Communities Site Coordinator (Richmond)

We’re looking for a bilingual and organized community member to help sell & distribute our fresh produce bags at WCCUSD schools in Richmond.

At Growing Together, our mission is to improve the health of our communities by creating & maintaining school gardens as hubs for fresh food access, youth education, and mutual aid.

Farms to Communities is a weekly CSA/fresh food access program run by Growing Together, in collaboration with public elementary & middle schools within Oakland, West Contra Costa, and San Lorenzo Unified School Districts.

Our program supports healthy families by offering significantly subsidized produce bags for pre-order and pickup after school, all while connecting local farmers to consistent, direct demand for their produce.

How you’ll contribute:

As a Farms to Communities Site Coordinator, you’ll be joining the team that is responsible for weekly produce bag sales & pick up events at 3 different WCCUSD schools (Washington Elementary, Peres Elementary, Soskin Middle). Your time will be spent packing produce into individual bags, driving bags to different school sites, setting them up on tables for distribution, and handling customer sales & questions during pick up. This role will work directly with most members of the Farms to Communities team, and will require both community-facing enthusiasm and pride in detailed execution. Specific responsibilities include:

  • Receiving & confirming produce orders from local farmers at school site

  • Packing fresh produce into (40-100) individual produce bags, according to a weekly packing list

  • Explaining our program offering & teaching community members how they can join our text message list or order produce bags for themselves

  • Helping school staff & families purchase or pick up pre-ordered produce bags after school. (We use the Square Point of Sale mobile app to facilitate payments & pickups)

  • Setting up & breaking down the tables, table clothes, & other materials needed for weekly produce pickups (ie. flyers, cash box)

  • Tracking & communicating feedback so that the Farms to Communities team can resolve issues or improve customer experiences

  • Reporting weekly sales numbers & any insights, trends, or analyses of the program’s health

What you’ll need to succeed:

  • Comfortable speaking both English and Spanish

  • In person sales & customer service experience

  • Consistent access to a sedan sized car or larger that you can use weekly to produce bags and equipment as needed

  • The ability & willingness to lift and carry up to 25lbs of weight (produce bags are 10-14 lbs each)

  • Nice to have:

    • Some personal context & familiarity with the school communities we’ll be working with: Peres Elementary, Washington Elementary, Soskin Middle School.

    • Experience/comfort using a point-of-sale mobile app like Square or Clover for taking customer payments

The nitty gritty:

  • This role is a part-time role with flexible needs - it can be set anywhere from 8 to 25 hours/week, depending on your availability & interest. We are hoping to fill this position as soon as possible.

  • Compensation for this role is $35 per hour, benefits negotiable

  • This role will primarily be based out of Richmond, California - in proximity to Peres Elementary, Washington Elementary, and Soskin Middle Schools.

  • You will be working alongside our team for the entirety of our onboarding & training process (2-3 weeks), before being responsible for your full role responsibilities.

Life at Growing Together:

  • We’re a team of do-ers. Almost every member of our team  is a program director responsible for the planning, management, and execution of their own program. This means that our team is very flat, and that every person is accountable for delivering a piece of our organization’s work.

  • We don’t believe that one size fits all. We place a lot of agency and trust in each person to steward our programs in ways that are relevant to & informed by the different schools, communities, and needs of their context.

  • Our work is integrated within school communities. Most of our time and attention is spent working with people outside of our organization. Whether that be students, teachers,  school administrators, parents, or farmers, a majority of our day to day time is spent building relationships with the communities that we are cultivating & participating in.

  • We’re a network of community members, connected by values & mission. Given the varying schedules of our programs, our team relies on monthly in-person team meetings, as well as informal weekly check-ins with other team members to stay in sync and collaborate on cross team projects.
