Movement Building

A coalition of 80+ organizations, one shared goal.

In 2023, we launched the California School Garden Coalition: 80+ organizations working to win reliable, dedicated state funding for garden education.

Systems challenge

Half of California school districts have school gardens, but only 9% of those gardens are used regularly to teach students. Most garden education depends on outside funding, which makes access unequal from school to school.

Our approach

The coalition has brought a $25 million budget request to Sacramento, the first state funding ever proposed dedicated to garden-based instruction in California. Whatever happens in a given budget cycle, the coalition exists to keep making the case until garden education is funded like the core instruction it is.

Inside the coalition

How the coalition builds the case

80+ organizations

Groups across California have joined the California School Garden Coalition since it launched in 2023. Collectively, our coalition reaches over 200,000 K-12 students.

Stronger together than apart

No single organization can make the case for garden education on its own. The coalition gathers the stories, classroom experience, and hard numbers from groups across California and puts them in one place for the first time, so whatever the path to funding, the ask is backed by evidence from the whole field.

Here for the long haul

Budget cycles come and go. The coalition keeps making the case until garden education is funded like the core instruction it is.
