Board of Directors
We're looking for volunteer board members to help steer the organization: setting strategy, overseeing our finances, and connecting our work to new people and resources.
Growing Together partners with public schools to improve the health and sustainability of communities: greening schoolyards, teaching hands-on environmental education, planting trees, and increasing access to fresh food. Today that work reaches 11,590 students a week at 49 Title 1 schools across four East Bay districts.
How you'll contribute
Our board meets quarterly and works close to the ground. Members govern the organization (strategy, budgets, policies, and oversight of the co-directors) and lend their expertise where it's needed between meetings.
- Set strategic direction through annual planning and goal-setting
- Review and approve the annual budget and monitor the organization's financial health
- Support and evaluate the co-directors
- Help with fundraising: identify potential donors, join select donor meetings, and serve as a reference where it helps
- Represent Growing Together in the community, visit school program sites, and show up at key events
- Go deeper on one area of the work (development, finance, program, or governance) as an advisor to the admin team
What you'll need to succeed
- Passion for our mission and our approach
- Professional experience in an area like education, youth development, finance, fundraising, legal, marketing, community organizing, or sustainable agriculture
- A collaborative working style, and comfort working with people of different backgrounds and perspectives
Right now we're especially hoping to add finance or accounting depth and fundraising experience to the board. You don't need prior board experience: orientation and governance support come with the seat.
What we provide
Orientation & training. One-to-one and group onboarding with the admin team and program directors, plus ongoing support on nonprofit governance whenever you need it.
Staff support. The co-directors prepare meeting materials, share budgets and organizational documents, and are available between meetings. Staff attend and support every board meeting.
Liability protection. Directors & Officers insurance coverage, and legal protection for actions taken in good faith as a board member.
How to express interest
Send a short note about who you are, why Growing Together, and what you'd bring to the board, along with a resume or LinkedIn profile, to jobs@growingtogetherprojects.org. We'll follow up to set up a conversation.
